Ever since I was a teenager, I've been wearing contact lens. To be precise - I've been wearing Baush & Lomb Soflens. There isn't any particular reason why I chose this brand other than the price. There are 6 pieces in a box, which can last half a year (monthly disposables), and they only cost $60.
But recently, my friend shared with me a new technology in contact lens that blew my mind away: Extended Wear Contact Lens.
At first when I heard it, I was skeptical. Many times, I asked him "you mean it's continuous wear for a month, but you have to take it out everyday right?"
"No. I wear it everyday, for 30 days, even when I'm sleeping", he explained repeatedly.
Astonished by the existence of such technology, I googled it up true enough, he is right! There is indeed such a thing!
Coincidentally, dear was there when my friend shared with me, and he too, was intrigued and decided to return to the good old days of wearing contact lens. And even more coincidentally, his specatacles broke last weekend while he was yawning and on Sunday, he went to order his contact lens.
Back to my story. So I was a little envious that dear could order his extended wear contact lens, and I was stuck with a year's supply of Baush & Lomb Soflens.
But I wanted to try my luck and see if I could return the unopened boxes to my optometrist and top up for the extended wear contact lens.
So with no receipt, I went back to my optometrist today. Thankfully, she was nice enough to allow me exchange my contact lens after topping up a sum of $84.00! Oh what a kind soul!
Thus here's the breakdown of my extended wear contact lens for half a year's supply:
$48.00 (3pcs per box) x 3 boxes (buy 3 box get 1 free) = $144.00
Trade in my Soflens:
$144.00 - $60.00 = $84.00
And in case you are wondering what's the fuss with Extended Wear Contact Lens, here are the advantages:
- They allow up to 6 times more oxygen to pass through than normal disposable lenses
- They do not dry up as much (Plus point for those who have dry eyes)
- They have a special biocompatible surface treatment that decreases protein and bacteria buildup. (This is important because protein and bacteria buildup on contact lenses predisposes you to eye infections)
