Unlike the usual weekends filled with church, friends, and food, I had an opportunity to do something different today.
Indeed, it was a special weekend this week because dear and I volunteered to help out with the Standard Chartered Run 2010 this year. But instead of helping out by being part of the cheering crew or logistics crew etc, we together with Kruzers assisted in being outriders for the race.
For dear, he was deployed to a specific Medical Post and was utilized as and when there was a casualty near his vicinity. As for me, I was a pillion on the lead bike of the 10K race; assisting to update the command centre when I have passed a certain marker.
01:15am - Arriving at Padang, we had a late supper / early breakfast and (depending on the time of deployment of different individuals,) waited for time to pass before moving off to our respective locations.
05:00am - Though the 10K race was due to commence at 07:45am, some Kruzers and I made our way to the start of the 10K race and arrived at 05:00am. It was a night full of waiting, but we were filled with excitement despite out weariness.
07:45am - It was finally time to flag off the 10K race. The blue wave of runners came running down the Esplanade Bridge as the lead bikes throttled off slowly.
Though it was a cool to be in front of the runners and leading them on, it was also stressful, at least for the riders. This is because they had to make sure they know the route well else the whole bunch of runners will go off route if we lead them wrongly!
08:00am - It wasn't long after that we entered the Marina Bay area, which was somewhere near the 3K marker of their route.
At this juncture, the elite runners were quickly identified as the two young men (per the picture above), who were leading by some distance. Way to go guys!
02:30pm - After several hours of duty and waiting, we were told the that the last runner was making his way back to the finishing line.
We were then signaled to ride behind the cars (which were behind the runner). As we all rode past the finishing line, we were greeted with claps, and people high-fiving each other.
..
Staying up through Saturday night till Sunday afternoon, you bet most of us were exhausted and deadbeat. And though we may crash into bed from exhaustion or sleep deprivation, I believe it was really an experience for the Kruzers, especially for both dear and I.
Indeed, it's the satisfaction we get from being part of an event and helping out with fellow friends and riders with what we are passionate with - riding.
That said, I'm definitely looking forward to helping out in SCMS (Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore) 2011!
