Broun Cafe

 |

With the prevalence of so many new bistros and cafes, it's certainly hard to find ont that stands out amongst the crowd.

But such is Broun Cafe, which serves wholesome and healthy food; one which rarely get to eat in our junkfood generation.

Situated along one North Canal Road, it is surprising to find a homely and cosy eatery that serves healthy food at reasonable prices. Furthermore, they are advocates of local talents, so you dining in Broun Cafe is indeed a treat for both your ears and your mouth.

What I like about their cafe is that everything looks so old-school, creative, and cute. Check out their menu that's presented in a clipboard.

That aside, they don't really have a wide variety on their menu. I'm totally fine with it because I don't have to wreck my brains to think of my food choice amongst gazillion other dishes. But if you are in for a wide variety, you might be quite disappointed here.

For our main courses, dear ordered their Herb Grilled Chicken; rosemary and thyme infused, with broun sauce ($14). I didn't particularly fancy it because the chicken meat is a tough for me. But the BF says it's just chewy, which he is totally fine with. Suffice to say, he wiped out everything on his plate.

I'm not sure if this is an indication of his extreme hunger, his habit of finishing the food on his plate regardless of how good or bad, or that he isn't that hungry but the food is darn delicious. Seriously, 8 years and I still can't tell.

For me, I ordered the Pan-Seared Dory; with a seared crisp exterior and seasoned with a hint of garlic ($14). Frankly, I thought it tasted quite average. In fact, the vegetables on the side tasted better than the dory. But again, the BF said it taste nice because of it's slight crisp skin with soft and slightly salted dory meat. He then concluded that I should appreciate my meals for being tasty yet healthy.

Fine. Maybe my taste-buds were not working too well that day. Maybe, it wasn't that average tasting.

And to end our dining experience at Broun Cafe, we ordered their Broun-ie with Ice-Cream ($6). This time round, I can say with assurance and confidence that this doesn't taste as good as it looks. For one, the brownie isn't warm. Secondly, it isn't that soft - you know, the sort that disintegrates in your mouth?

So for this dessert, I'm sorry but it's getting 2 out of 5 stars from me.

Then again, brownies and ice-cream aren't the healthiest indulgences. So if I were you, I'll probably pop by their cafe for their other healthier dishes like the stews (served with either wholemeal buns or rice) or the main courses.
