Valentine's At District 10

 |

Valentine's day this year brought me large grins and deep frowns. Lets's begin with what put a huge smile on my face.

It was a busy and hectic day at work, when suddenly the office doorbell rang. Thinking that it might be a delivery from a courier company, I walked to the door and was greeted by a stranger holding a bouquet of roses.

Surprised, I opened the door and the stranger said "Are you Grace?"

"Yeah?" I replied with a skeptical tone.

"These flowers are for you from Mr Lionel Chew. Happy Valentine's day!"

Stunned and speechless, I accepted the bouquet and finally let out "Awwwwwwhhhhhh... Thank you!"

Then onwards, I really couldn't stop grinning and smiling to myself! I called dear to thank him, and I swear my face and ears were getting hotter and hotter!

You might think, what's the big deal?

Well, for a guy who doesn't believe in the giving of non functional and non practical items, surprising me with a bouquet of flowers was really a big leap of change! Again, awwwwwhhh...

After a wonderful surprise in the afternoon, I was all psyched and excited for our Valentine's day dinner at District 10. As dear and I are those who really fancy a good, cosy, quiet, ambience, I thought that Lady Iron's Chef recommendation for this place would be a good venue. After all, it's his recommendation for a romantic restaurant which is also laid back and affordable.

So I made reservations for both dear and I way before Valentine's day. But as the dates drew closer, I had a phone call from them saying that due to overwhelming response, they are separating the dinner time into two timeslots - 6:30pm to 8:30pm, and 8:30pm to the closing of business hours. I chose the latter because dear usually gets off work later.

Arriving at 8:10pm, we were heaved a sigh of relief to see that it wasn't that crowded as what I'd expected, and that we were able to make our order despite the fact that it wasn't time for our dinner at 8:30pm yet. I thought that it was a pretty good gesture.

Anyway, we ordered, and were disappointed to find out that they could only serve their Valentine's Day menu, which to be honest, was few and pathetic. For main courses, we could only choose between the Louisiana Baby Back Ribs, the Roasted Baby Back Ribs with Smoky Barbeque Sauce, and the Beer Battered Fish and Chips. Doesn't that just leave us to choose between either fish, or meat?

Since the Beer Battered Fish and Chips had the word "beer" in it, I'd rather be safe and abstain for trying, lest it affects my road judgment while riding. With a menu of little choices, we reluctantly chose whatever that's non alcoholic and braces-friendly.

5 to 10 mins later, we were served our Starters. Dear ordered the Fried Buffalo Chicken Wings (15.00) that tasted pretty interesting. The sauce was sweet with a little tinge of sourness. Also, the spiciness doesn't get to you until after your first bite. As dear would put it, it was really not bad.

My starter - Creamy Wild Mushroom Soup ($10.00) was served seconds later. The crispy croutons was something we enjoyed. Other than that, the soup was ok. But I think it was a little diluted. Definitely not as good as the one I had at Prive Restaurant, Monsta Cafe, or Scotts Restaurant.

As our main courses took some time to arrive (more than 20 minutes in fact), I took the time to give dear my valentine's day present to him.
I know valentine's day is not all about the food and presents, but I saw this item which is functional, practical, sturdy, and mobile! Most of all, it was affordable! So I couldn't resist the temptation and ended up buying it for him.

After what seemed like half an hour, our main courses finally arrived! Dear ordered the Roasted Baby Back Ribs with Smoky Barbeque Sauce Served with Fries ($28.00). And as I quote from him "I really goes to show about the quality of food when your fries are the main highlight of the dish" - or somewhere along that line.

While you might think that taking his taste-buds for word might give a biased review, trust me. I tried it and I seriously think that Cafe Cartel's St Louis Ribs taste much better, with bigger portions too!

My main dish - Rigatoni ($24.00) was served moments later. After my first bite into the meatballs, I was so so disappointed. It made me want to go back to Pastamania to have their Meatball Pasta. Sigh!

The meatballs had a very strong onion taste (and smell), while the rest of the pasta was just plain. Disappointing!

Last but not least, our dessert - Strawberry Cheesecake - was brought out. Dear and I took our first bites and gave each other the "this-really-cannot-make-it" look intuitively!

While I applaud our similar food preference and judgement, I was very surprised that how bad this tasted. Even Sarah Lee's Frozen Pound Cake would beat this flat! The gelatin of the Strawberry Cake was tough and sticky, and the cheesecake itself, tasted "mouldy" as what dear mentioned. Any similar strawberry cakes sold in BreadTalk, Starbucks, Coffeebean etc would surely taste much better.

All in all, it was really a bad and dissatisfying experience for both of us. Guess we would either stick with Prive or start exploring other alternatives for our Anniversary and dear's birthday this year.

Meanwhile, despite the unenjoyable food, I was still a very happy and blisful lady. Thank you dear, for everything.
