Goodbye Ruby

Time flies. It's been almost 2 years since I first had Ruby and I've watched how he grew from a small fluffy kit (name for baby rabbit) to a young and active rabbit.

Throughout this one over year, I wouldn't say that I have been the best pet owner. I mean I still do feed him regularly, and my mom cleans him every 2 days. But as my schedule gets more hectic with work and school, Ruby is mostly kept in the cage and is only let out when my parents are not home. As such, I really don't have time to play with him or let him out, and though I am filled with guilt and shame for that, I don't want to be selfish by keeping him and caging him up all day. After all, he is a rabbit. He should be let out, played with, allowed to roam the rooms, and have the freedom to be let loose.

With that, I reluctantly put him up for adoption by posting an ad in a forum.

Several weeks later, I received an SMS from an interested adopter. Afraid that the adopter would be someone who is paid to kill rabbits as seen on some of the videos that is being circulated on the net, I screened him with a few questions.

Relieved that he is genuinely sincere in adopting Ruby because of his love for rabbits and his desire for another rabbit to accompany his pet rabbit at home, I schedule a date and time for the adoption to take place.

Thursday finally arrived sooner than I thought. The adopter came and after we've chatted on Ruby's personalities, diet, habits etc, I assisted him to carry Ruby and the cage downstairs.

While he was flagging a cab, I had some alone time with Ruby to bid my last farewell.

About an hour after Ruby left, the adopter was thoughtful and sweet enough to send me a MMS of Ruby arriving safely at his house. What a nice chap!

Though I am thankful that Ruby is now in the hands of a caring and loving owner, I still miss him very much. And if someone ever invents a communication device that allows humans to speak with animals, I'll get one and tell Ruby I'm sorry.

Goodbye, my dear boy.

Ruby Goes Bananas

I know I haven't been mentioning Ruby (my rabbit) for some time now.

Don't worry, he's alive and hopping, and is still crazy over bananas!

Like rabbit, like owner indeed.

Boarding For Rabbits

This week, my folks are away for church camp and I will away be away for the weekends.

So I decided to ask around for boarding recommendations. Fortunately, I was introduced to someone, who does boarding for rabbits for $6.00 per day. That's really cheap!

Without hesitation, I rang her up and quickly confirmed the pick up for today at 10:30PM.

Sigh. I'm going to miss Ruby for the next few days!

P/s: Drop me an email at grace.leong@chewonthenet.sg if you want further details regarding rabbit boarding.

Furballs

In the course of being a rabbit owner for the past year, I've come to realize that rabbits shed fur (apart from dropping their little loose fur everyday) from time to time.

But a few days ago, mom started complaining about the large amounts of fur that Ruby was shedding. She suspected that Ruby might have contracted some kind of skin disease, and suggested that I bring him to the vet. But before I start a panic attack and put him on a pet ambulance, I decided to groom him, and check out his fur condition at the same time.

So I did so yesterday, and saw that he is indeed dropping lots of fur, but as I reflect upon the causes of his condition, I realized that nothing has changed. He is still eating the same dry food, same water from the tap, same treats (banana once in a blue moon). Hence I figured that I should monitor his fur condition for a while more to see if things go out of hand.

But in the grooming process, I spotted several clumped fur and gosh it was so visually disturbing. Immediately, I brought out the scissors and began cutting off all the thick clumped fur, the excess long fur etc etc.

It took about half an hour before his fur-cut was done, and I stood there beaming with pride. And I really do have to applaud how still he was throughout the whole fur-cut. Such an obedient darling!

Well, I do hope he likes his trim. It does make him look skinnier anyway!

Ruby Turns ONE!

Dear Ruby,

Today you turn one year old. Yes, you are a big guy now in the rabbit world.

It's strange, one year seems to past by so fast. I can still remember how little you were when I first held you. In fact you were so small, I could hold you in my palm!

Look at you now, so big and fluffy. You are also getting more curious and active by the day, and at most times, I know you yearn to get out of the cage for more hops around the house.

I'll try to let you out of the cage more frequently and discreetly, since you've been a good boy so far.

Nonetheless, I am glad to have you as a pet. Thanks for bearing with me throughout the past year.

Happy Birthday!

Lots of love,
Your caring owner

Brushes And Strokes

With a little bit more time on my hands now, I find myself frequently playing with Ruby; feeding him, stroking him, brushing him, and sometimes giving him a bath.

So today, I decided to brush Ruby so as to get rid of any loose fur which he might unconsciously consume while he does his usual grooming and licking.

Because I haven't brushed him in quite a while, he seemed a bit cautious of the brush, as if it was some kind of scary monster with sharp teeth.

I really like this photo! You can see how inquisitive and curious he gets with just a simple brush. Ultimate cuteness!

After getting familiar with the brush, Ruby then decides to settle down and let me brush him. Isn't he a darling, patiently standing there while I brush him?

A few strokes and brushes later, you can see Ruby's eyelids getting heavier. He seems to like it a lot, and that makes me feel like a very satisfied and responsible pet owner.

Ahhhhh. Finally Ruby drifts off to sleep after constant cooing and brushing. I am even more satisfied now! :D

Lastly, I end off by giving him several gentle rubs and strokes on his head, which he really seems to love.

Banana Happiness

I have no idea why Ruby loves Bananas so much. Probably he and his owner share certain similarities. But if that's the case, then he should love to eat durians more than bananas. :)

Anyway, I always find it amazing how Ruby can smell the scent of a banana even when he cannot see it. He'll then start getting all excited and hoping that I will share my banana with him.

So yesterday, I took a video of him sharing a banana with me. Unfortunately, it took forever to upload the video so I thought that perhaps, pictures would suffice.

Tempting Ruby with a banana. Don't worry, he doesn't get to eat the whole banana. I share it with him.

He takes notice of it and starts becoming hysterical. Too bad, he has to answer the call of nature first.

This is what I usually do: I bite off teeny weeny bit of banana and give it to him

See how excited and happy he is? A banana never fails to make my rabbit happy. :)

Ruby's A Boy!

Some time ago, I was confused with the identity of Ruby. I vaguely recalled the Shop Keeper telling me that Ruby's a boy. But as he grew older, I couldn't see any of his male genitals! That got me confused and a little paranoid, but oh well, I decided to leave the matter under the carpet because boy or girl, I still love him they same.

So recently, I finally let him out after a long period of time due to my knee injury; which made it difficult for me to bend my knees, let him out, supervise him, and/or run after him if gets out of hand.

But while he was hopping about, I noticed 2 bumps at his rump and I thought it was some sort of tumor or cysts. It really didn't help when Ruby kept moving about because the moment I wanted to touch it or feel it, he would hop away.

Due to the lack of judgement, I thought well, it was some sort of hair ball that was clumped together by his urine or some sort.

So off I went, to the dressing cupboard and took out a pair or hair dressing scissors; preparing to cut off the "hair clump".

Fortunately I stood by the notion "When in doubt, don't do it." So I decided to check again and this time round, I carried him with one hand on his chest and the other on his rump and I went "Oh!"

Yes there they are! My rabbit is a boy and I can't believe I almost killed Ruby in the process of finding out! :$

Boy or Girl?

What happens if you find out that your pet rabbit, in which you have convinced the whole world that it is a boy, turns out to be a girl instead?

Well, it all started out one day when I was reading through some forums about Rabbit Care, and a forum member was asking fellow Rabbit owners on how to find out the gender of a rabbit. Based on the experience of these forumers and sources from the net, a list of "How to find out the gender of your rabbit" was churned out and since I happened to be reading that particular forum, I decided to check out Ruby as well.

So I flipped him over (in spite of the scratches he gave me while struggling to break free from my grip), and had a good look underneath.

Nothing. I am quite certain I didn't see any testicles hanging out and at Ruby's age, it would have been very obvious to spot the male genitals.

Sigh. I am confused and unsatisfied! If Ruby is a girl, why did the shop keeper tell me otherwise? Or was Ruby neutered when he was young?

Grrrr. For now, let's continue to be in denial and resume calling Ruby a "him". :$

Ruby is 7 months old and HE IS STILL GROWING! To accommodate his growth and his active lifestyle, I've finally decided to get him a bigger cage and essentially, make him a happier rabbit.

However, being a student means that budget constraints are tight and therefore, I decided that a good condition second hand cage that is below a $100 would suffice. Fortunately, I manage to find a seller of a 1m long rabbit cage with the power of the internet in just a few clicks.

Immediately, I text the seller to indicate that I was interested in his cage and within the next day, he delivered the cage to my doorstep - Simple is that!

As you can see, Ruby's busy checking out the cage.

And here's Ruby giving me a weird look. Must be the new house that is causing some apprehension.

Well, I'm not sure that he likes it but I think he does because all day long, I hear the sound of Ruby hopping about, scampering, dragging the little "hut" in his new cage etc.. Here's an example:

Hmm. I think with all the leg space for him to stretch and do his routine hopping exercise, he'll be quite a happy rabbit for some time! :D

I'm quite certain that watching a rabbit groom himself wouldn't be as entertaining as watching a parrot mimic human words, a dog learning how to play dead, a cat eyeing each bird it sees, or even a hamster running in a wheel.

But you've got to admit that while watching Ruby in the above video, you would have at least squealed or smiled just a teeny weenie bit at his cuteness.

Doesn't Ruby look like a fur-ball with those cute long ears and pinkish-red eyes? Ultimate cuteness! :D

From the picture above, you can conclude that I'm not exactly a caring pet owner.

But man, the weather's so hot and the sun's exceptionally glaring these days.

Thank God for shades and what I think has been the best invention of all times - Air Con.

Ruby Gets Wet

I was told that a healthy rabbit should never bathe because they can keep themselves clean without any help from us humans.

Ruby isn't sick. He's far from sick, in fact he is a pretty healthy boy. But yesterday, I decided to ignore ALL online rabbit advice about bathing because I wanted to keep his white coat of fur clean and at the same time, experience the whole fuss of why rabbits should not be bathed.

So I opened the cage, carried him gently to the toilet, and placed him down on the cold toilet floor. I tried using my legs to cordon him off to an area, and fortunately, it worked. Then I used my hands to turn on the shower and slowly adjusted it to the ideal temperature - mildly warm.

Of course I didn't shower Ruby directly like how we humans bathe. That would definitely send his heart racing until he gets a cardiac arrest. What I did was I slowly wet him with my hands, stroking him each time and cooing him gently. With each stroke I made, Ruby gradually got wetter and wetter, until he was drenched.

Up at this point, I DID NOT SHOWER HIM DIRECTLY. I just kept stroking him with more water and more water, until he got really wet.

Surprisingly, Ruby did not retaliate or struggle. He was a darling! He simply hunched his back with his head stooped low and did not move throughout the whole process! I even checked his heartbeat to see if it was racing which was indicative of being stressed. No, his heartbeat was regular and he continued to remain still even after I have turned off the shower!

Unfortunately I wasn't able to take any pictures of the whole process. But I did take a few shots of him drying up! :)

Ruby licking his hands

Ruby cleaning his face

Ruby cleaning his nose

Ruby drying up under a towel

"Can I come out please?"

Ruby licking his feet

Well I must applaud Ruby for his bravery, and don't worry, I won't bathe him unnecessarily either. But I must say that this whole process wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be! :D

I didn't buy the hat for Ruby intentionally. It came together with a soft toy and so I took it and placed it on Ruby's head.

I think it's clear that Ruby doesn't like it :$

I don't remember seeing Mocha sleep but I do catch moments of Ruby slipping into slumber.

After which, I will tiptoe my way to his cage and shout "RUBY!"

Ha ha. You should see how fast his heart beats after that :)

Behold He Comes

It's been two and a half months since Ruby came into our family, and I am glad that he is finally able to recognize my scent! :D

Recently, he has been hopping to me, nudging me with his wriggly nose, and brushing his whiskers past my feet. It's really ticklish, especially for me who is absolutely intolerant to tickles.

Nonetheless, the fact that Ruby is coming towards me shows affection and recognition I suppose.

So here's a picture of him hopping towards me in excitement:

Oh he's my little cute boy! Don't you think so? :$
