Canvas In The Sky

There are two kinds of sunsets: Those that are subtle and occur without you knowing, and those that simply take your breath away.

Today, I had an opportunity to enjoy what I thought was a gorgeous sunset.

Standing at the balcony of one of my friend's office, I gazed at the vibrant sky that's filled with streaks of orange, yellow, and purple hues. Though the glowing ball of sun was blocked by the surrounding high-rise flats, I was still amazed and utterly mesmerized at the beautiful colors in the sky.

It was all too surreal, too beautiful, too awesome for words.

And perhaps, the only words that I can describe such a beautiful natural occurrence are the lyrics of the song How Great Thou Art.

Goodbye 2011. Hello 2012.

2011 passed by in a blink of an eye. In fact, all I could remember was January - when I got my Honda Steed VSE 400, February - when I celebrated my birthday, Valentine's day, and Chinese New Year, and the rest of the year was just a blur. Then before I knew it, Christmas came and shortly after, "TADA!" - Dear and I are celebrating New Year's Eve at our friends' place.

Well, putting aside the celebrative mood, New Year's Eve has always been one that strikes a chord. I often take this day to reflect on the milestones, achievements, and setbacks in 2011, before letting out an audible sigh in relief that regardless of the good times and (especially) the bad times, the year is over and there's much to hope for in 2012.

But in hindsight, 2011 was indeed a good year.

03 Jan: Bought Stevie, The Steed
19 Feb: Rode my Steed to Tanjung Sutera
26 Feb: Signed our HDB lease 
16 May: I got My MBA - I mean MacBook Air
29 Jul: The boyfriend gave me a Durian Surprise!
20 Aug: Conquered the roads at Mount Ophir
22 Nov: Completed my Degree and commenced the Day of Freedom

It is not to say that the whole year was smooth-sailing and a bed of roses. I had my fair share of hiccups, but I'm sure that these are noteworthy lessons for me to learn from.

And as I countdown the seconds before 2012 arrive, I'm just thankful and grateful to God for his provision, sustenance, and blessings throughout 2011.

With that.. 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1... Happy New Year!

The Good Samaritan

If there's anything to give thanks for this week, it would be how He has provided me a textbook for one of my modules this term.. FREE!

For that, another 80 over bucks saved. WOOHOO!

Thank God for a wonderful samaritan - a fellow senior extended her generosity by giving her textbook for free!

This Week's Oasis

The past week and this week has got me worn and weary. I do realize that smiles are few and far between, there is a general dissatisfaction aloofness, and not forgetting the periodical stress and anxiety coupled with dull headaches.

But as I was riding home today, my mind played an old yet familiar song all of a sudden. I'm not sure how this song got into my head in the first place, because I was originally listening to some other songs on my bluetooth headset. But this song certainly caught my attention:



As the song continued to loop in my head, a chill was sent down my spine.

Call it divine intervention, coincidence, or whatsoever, I was reminded of a Higher Being and His promises and boy, it gave me the goosebumps.

Well people say He works in mysterious ways, and I couldn't agree more!

The Note On The Wall

When life gets hectic and spins out of it's axis, and when the strength in you depletes faster than you can replenish, all you need is a word of encouragement and assurance that "everything's going to turn out fine".

Such is true for myself. But instead of a verbal word of encouragement, I was comforted by just a simple note that was pasted on the mirror. The note wrote:

"I will refresh the weary and satisfy the faint" Jeremiah 31:25

Funny how God reveals himself in the smallest ways!

Are You Blindfolded?

Stumbled across the following just a few days ago and had an epiphany.

See the simple truth that we all learn in the video is that - we can't walk straight without a visual guide yes?

Applying this simple truth in life, isn't it true that we go around in circles when don't have an aim, or a goal (visual guide in this sense)? After which, we either realize that we are back in the same place or in a spot where it's a far deviation from our goal?

For believers, when we can't "see God" and the purposes that God has in our lives, we end up "wandering about" in life and running the rat race, probably just like how the Israelites did in the desert for 40 days and 40 nights.

I don't know about you but this really got me thinking.

How Great Thou Art

Sunrises and sunsets are my thing. Be it a sunrise, or a sunset, I'll stop whatever I am doing to just gaze at the ball of sun rising up in the air, or disappearing into the horizon.

It is one of the most beautiful things that one can witness.

Fortunately, I had a chance to enjoy today's sunset. The sky was lit with a mix or purple and orange. The clouds were fluffy and reflected a glow from the sun's rays. I parked my bike, stopped, and couldn't help but take a picture.

And while watching the sunset, I can only stand in awe of Him. Indeed, such a beautiful and simple act of nature can only reflect how great God is. Oh how great thou art!

Matthew 6:25

On a typical sunny weekday, I love to take my time to suit up before riding my work. I don't know about you, but there is something therapeutic about having the warm sunshine on your skin, as you breathe in the morning air.

So as I was suiting up, I noticed that there were some pigeons / birds nearby. They seemed to be either sharing food, or fighting for a piece of their morning breakfast.

But while I was watching them, I was reminded of Matthew 6:25

25 "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?

Oh how I love it when I can apply His word in my daily life. :)

Was just reading the bible this morning when I came across this verse:

"I am the Lord your God, who teaches you what is best for you, who directs you in the way you should go." Isaiah 48:17

Now for a week filled with emotional turmoil, and challenges from work and school, this verse brought an immediate comfort, assurance, and hope.

Am so glad that He reveals himself in such a timely manner :)

What's Your Goal?

The word 'Goal' would probably be a very sensitive trigger in this World Cup Season. But in my post, the word 'Goal' refers to:

1. The result or achievement toward which effort is directed; aim; end.
2. The terminal point in a race.

See as I was studying and revising for my coming exams, a certain module - Information Systems - had a chapter on Goal-Setting, Goal-Seeking and Transformation Process. To summarize the chapter, goals are being set by the owner of the system, who passes on the goals to the Goal-Setting control, which passes on information, goals, and methods to the Goal Seeking Control and thereafter, the Process.

Well, it did strike an epiphany and made me think about what our goals are, and where do our goals come from. Many would definitely agree that our goals in life include having a good career, starting a family, having a good health, making lots of money etc.

But has anyone thought of what are the goals for our very existence? And where do these goals in life come from. They must come from somewhere.. someone?

Well, I'm glad to know my goal for my existence. And even more so, I know where my goal comes from. Do you?

Marina Mentality

Yesterday, I came across an insightful article about having the 'Marina' Mentality for believers. Well I really think that it is quite an interesting illustration, so I'll share it with you guys:

Most of us have the marina mentality.

What does this mean?

We on the marina have been saved and sometimes we are kicking ourselves and whacking each other due to difference in opinions that we lose track of those who are actually drowning.

Some of us Christians are drowning near the marina and are trying to stay afloat by holding on to things such as money, power, pleasures and positions. These are poor floating devices and we are actually drowning and the only way that we can stay afloat and be saved is to hold on to the life ring which is Jesus Christ and we on the marina must work together to throw out the life ring to others who are in the water and pull the ropes so that we can get people on to the marina.

As for us on the marina, we should not be treating it like a yacht club. We on the marina must be a rescue station and we must really work together as a team to pull the ropes of the life ring so that many more can be saved.

Once we the people start coming to church, we must be intentional in our language, songs and videos so that we allowed non christians to understand what is going on.

Lastly, you are never going to be saved, unless you humble yourself and know that you are drowning.

Today is one of those days, where my heart is filled with thanksgiving.

It all sparked off from a simple prayer to God for holding back the rain while I ride to work.

And as He so faithfully answers my simplest request, I thank Him for sustaining me as I juggle work and school, for passing my previous term, for safety on the road...

Oh there is just so much to thank Him for!

Sometime ago, I suggested to dear that we should start the day by reading the bible when we reach the office. He liked the suggestion, and agreed readily.

This has been going on for more than a week, and we are still keeping it going. Thank God!

Well I certainly hope it develops into a good habit over time, because there is nothing like entrusting the day to Him!

Our cellgroup leader - Weston, gave us some unleavened bread during cell today, and explained to us the meaning behind the unleavened bread.

It was good knowledge, and like the verse says in Deuteronomy 16:3 :

Do not eat it with bread made with yeast, but for seven days eat unleavened bread, the bread of affliction, because you left Egypt in haste--so that all the days of your life you may remember the time of your departure from Egypt.

I thought about how He is ever so faithful and merciful as I ate the bread.

Funny how these little details cause us to stop and remember how great He is.

Honestly, I shudder at the thought of the future, at the decisions I'll have to make one day, and the consequences of these decision.

So I'm praying for hope, for trust, for faith, for patience, to see that all things work for those who love Him and wait on Him.

Bird Poop Free!

Ever since my rant on the bird poop post some time ago, I am glad to declare that I've not had any bird poop on my bike ever since!

It was a simple and sincere prayer, somewhere along the lines of "God, please let tell the birds to stop pooping on my bike. Pretty please? Please ..please.. pleaseeee.. "

Amazing how God reveals his faithfulness and awesomeness through all kinds of prayers; even the simplest ones.

Indeed, His hands are never too short to save, His ears are never too dull to hear (Isaiah 59:1). To God be the glory.

Psalms 16

Some weeks ago, there was an incident that caused me to become worried and anxious. More accurately, this incident had yet to happen back then, and furthermore, I was the one that executed the whole process.

So I was tossing in bed, trying to get some shut-eye but to no avail. Then I thought about the bible, and was hoping that I would find some verse that will pop right up and speak to me in that moment in time.

Scarily, my iPhone bible led me to Psalms 16:

1. Keep me safe, O God, for in you I take refuge.

2. I said to the LORD, "You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing."

3. As for the saints who are in the land, they are the glorious ones in whom is all my delight.
4. The sorrows of those will increase who run after other gods. I will not pour out their libations of blood or take up their names on my lips.

5. LORD, you have assigned me my portion and my cup; you have made my lot secure.
6. The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance.

7. I will praise the LORD, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me.
8. I have set the LORD always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.

See I have no idea why my iPhone bible showed me that verse. When I just turned it on, there I was, staring at Psalms 16 and feeling so protected, so secure, so peaceful.

Indeed His promises are so real and so good. For that, I am assured of His everlasting faithfulness.

Prayer Of Thanksgiving

After a long time, I finally attended cell on Thursday. I was blessed by the fellowship, and of course the word.

In the midst of the discussion, someone brought up the issue of how prayer is often about our problems; how we ask God for help in different situation and circumstances.

It was then when a though struck me hard. "Hey wait a minute. If that is so, then does this mean that the biblical character - Daniel, had so many problems that he had to pray three times a day?" I thought to myself.

So I went back to the word and referenced back to this verse:

Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before. Daniel 6:10

It then occurred to me that often, at least for me, I find it so hard to pray for long because my prayers are usually in need of some divine help or forgiveness etc. And I guess the reason why Daniel could pray so consistently and faithfully with such discipline is because, he knew that there are simply too many things to thank God for.

And it encouraged me, set my mind to think that perhaps, that is how we as believers should approach prayer. After all, there are simply too many thing He has done and has yet to do that we should be thankful for.

Saw this verse from a friend's facebook status and I was reminded of my current situation.

Indeed, He's sovereign. He knows us better than ourselves. He knows our very substance before our form. We were wonderfully and fearfully made, and with that, He knows how much we can bear in every situation or circumstance.

It's all up to us now. Whether we will come out as gold will depend on how much we endure, persevere, and trust in His divine plans and purposes.
