Southern Ridges

Since both dear and I didn't have school, we did the most CRAZIEST thing that left us with aches in all places! Not too long ago, we visited Hort Park, Tree Top Walk and Henderson Waves. Today, we decided to walk through the whole entire Southern Ridges and back, and that's about.. 22 km!

Here's the route we took:
West Coast Park, Clementi Woods, Cut through the whole of NUS, Kent Ridge Park, Hort Park, Alexandra Arch, Earth Trail, Henderson Waves, Mount Faber!

Click here to see all the pictures

We started at 9 plus and ended at near 5pm with no breaks in between, except for a quick lunch at Seah Im Food Centre. Well, I am the more spontaneous-full-of-crazy-ideas person that's why we decided to do this trail/hike! But I really would suggest starting from Kent Ridge Park because from West Coast Park, directions to Kent Ridge Park are not clear and you end up having to walk about 2km before reaching Kent Ridge Park!

Haha though it was really tiring, it was indeed fun and fulfilling!

So calling all young couples out there, here's a dating tip that you both can do together! It's free and completely healthy!

The Attempt Of The Skirts

Ever since dear started riding his bike, I seldom wear skirts anymore. Most of the time, it's either jeans or.. more jeans! Ok, once in a blue moon I do wear dresses (with leggings) too!

I guess why I also wear jeans so ever often is because they are slim fit, comfortable, and you don't have to worry about 'exposing' anything accidentally!

Today, I resolved to start wearing skirts at least on the days where I don't meet dear. Tada! Off to school I went, wearing this!

Top: Christmas Present, G2000
Skirt: $20 odd, Surfer's Paradise
Shoes: $13.90, John Little

There you go! Skirt attempt number one! :)

Give Thanks

"Be joyful always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus." 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

I can vividly remember just a few years ago, I was at this stage in maturity where each time I hear a testimony, I would go "wow!" and then I will ask God why was He doing a greater thing or a greater miracle in other people's life and not mine. Call it childish, petty or unassured, when I look back and realized how much my mindset has changed, I smiled.

In then quick reflection, I remembered the verse of how we should be faithful in small things first, then big things.

In the same manner, shouldn't we give thanks to God in both small things and big things? I guess that was why I was complaining to God about how I wish His miracles would be more evident in my life back those years.

Now as I've grown a lil' more, I finally get it. God has been faithful, so great, miraculous all these while, just that I have been so blind to the small things that He has done in my life. So now, I'll look for every opportunity to give Him my thanks, my praise.

Because we can never thank God enough for what He has done.

"If Only.."

If only I was in my world, where details don't matter.

Then I wouldn't really have to worry about the consequences of being clumsy or careless, or the acts of safety, or having to think through every detail, analyze and evaluate every process before making a decision, or being stressed out at the choices I make that might cause the slightest emotional upheave.

Probably then, my life would really be a blank canvas, where a splatter of paint or a blot of ink could jolly well be interpreted as something sophisticated and abstract, or simple and blatant. Just like coffee spills, or water stains - mistakes might be clumsily made, colors might be the best representation of my moods, and simple strokes of the paint brush might even depict a story.

Yes, if I lived in that world; my world, things will really seem so much laid-back, simple, serene and easy.

I would say this desire of running away to my world of fantasy seems to arise when I am facing an emotional struggle. Perhaps this is my defense mechanism of hiding from pain and fear, just like how an ostrich buries its head in the soil in times of danger. I know I shouldn't, but woe to me for being a slave to my emotions and thoughts, and thus far, running away and crying seems to be the only way to get over it.

Then again, who knows the crazy things I might do to appease my anger, or comfort my hurt? Definitely retail therapy, cutting drastic hair cuts, and painting my nails in a weird color helps!

More Than Just A Red Dot

My Economics teacher, who happens to be sarcastic, pompous, know-it-all and full of herself, has lately been the trigger of my thoughts. With that description, you would imagine what kind of first impression you might have of her. However amongst the bias views and illustrations that she has given, she mentioned something that struck me hard yesterday.

"Do you know that Singapore is an economical miracle?"

I stared blankly at her, nodded my head in agreement but without further understanding of the meaning behind her question.

Photo taken from here

Somewhere in her hefty explanation of her awe in how Singapore came from nothing to something, I was reminded of God.

Like what she mentioned, was it the leaders of the country that brought Singapore this far?Maybe, but other countries have good and wise leaders too. Or was it the people that were cooperative? Then again, other countries have cooperative citizens as well. So then how did Singapore prosper in just 20 to 30 years, alone?

As much as she is a Christian, she claims that this remains a mystery. Ask me, I'd say God.

Previously, I know how Singapore has been blessed, but regretfully, I wasn't convicted as I am now. And though I didn't live in to see the winds of change that Singapore had before and after, I count myself blessed to be born in this generation where Singapore is thriving in prosperity. So just take a moment to think, of how far we have come as a nation, and think of the possible reasons that make our country one of the top 20 richest countries in the world, or the having the award for the best airport, the best hub and etc..

Just think, and ask yourself, how? Can't put a finger to it? It isn't a mystery, it's God's blessing.

I Got It!

Recently, I have been on the look out for part time jobs and that will best suit my school schedule and of course, my passion. Before I announce the good news, let me rewind the tape to the events that happened in the course of my search for a part time job.

When I started looking for a part time job after ending my interim job in Jaime's company, it was just a simple prayer in my heart. Something that went along the line of "Oh boy, I really need a part time job God." As simple as that!

Subsequently, I received a private message from someone in Facebook whom isn't my friend, but happened to stumble upon my profile and see my working background. Apparently, he needs help in his job and is looking for part timers. Unfortunately after a few conversations, the pay wasn't attractive enough for me to take it up. Nonetheless, I continued with that simple prayer.. believing, hoping, trusting.

Everyday I would search the net for jobs, and after much effort, I found one that was interesting and really cool. Without much further ado, I submitted my resume and waited.. for 3 weeks! On monday, I received a call from the company (that I submitted my resume to) for an interview on wednesday, which is today!

So off I went for the interview, without expecting much. However deep in my heart, I really wanted the job because I love the nature of the job! After the interview, I am grateful to God because I GOT THE JOB! I will officially be working as a Part Time IT Music Trainer, going around local schools (both primary and secondary) to teach on a project basis! As for the pay wise, it is really attractive and I won't disclose! But I really want to thank God, because he really provides, more than what I can ask or imagine!

Praise the Lord!

Bones and Ribs

Last friday, I finally had a chance to meet up with an ex-colleague - Henry, and we both went for dinner at Cafe Cartel at Tampines Mall, then coffee at Starbucks!

Well we all know that Cafe Cartel is famous for its St Louis Pork Ribs, so I decided to give that dish a try. Guess what! It was on promotion, and it cost $12.80 instead of the usual $15 plus.

Interior at Cafe Cartel
Henry!
A light from the ceiling that was hovering over our food the entire time
First up, bread and butter
Henry ordered Salad. Yuck I eat greens, but not salad.
I had ST LOUIS PORK RIBS! It was an achievement that I manage to eat all my fries, and most of the ribs. To be precise, I had 3 ribs left and gosh, my stomach felt like a puffer-fish ready to explode. Thanks Henry for dinner!

P/s: Dear yy, if you are reading this, when are we meeting up again?

Happy Birthday Grandmother

Birthdays are usually a time where family, relatives and loved ones gather together for a celebration, and yesterday, my family and relatives from my mom's side gathered together for my grandmother's birthday!

Usually, grandmother's birthday celebration would be held during lunch time, but this time, we had it during Tea-break. Expecting a good spread of food, dear and I decided to give lunch a pass since we weren't hungry anyway. Instead, we decided to stroll through Holland Village, which happens to be around the corner of where Grandmother resides in.

On a side note: We saw Glenn Lim and his wife at Ya kun in Holland Village yesterday. We went over to shake hands, said a friendly hello and chatted for a while, what a coincidence!
I don't visit Holland Village often, probably annually I guess. But each time I re-visit this place, it gives a cosy feeling, warm feeling. Here, you can see shophouses, eateries, cafes, pubs lined adjacent to each other. At night, it is bustling with activities especially at Wala Wala Cafe Bar where many flock back for its friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Be seduced by their music played by live bands, and expose your taste-buds to their food delights
Holland Village Market & Food Centre! I hear they serve nice Nasi Lemak? Hmm, one day I should really try some..
.. More shophouses. Dear feels hot and sticky, that explains.
Yum yum! Great food even for Tea-break! Sushi, ham, chicken wings, pizza, yam cakes, birthday cake and more!
Birthday cake
Introducing.. my grandmother.
Awwwh.. a heartwarming moment!

I Have Moved!

My sincere apologies for the intermittent closure of this blog today. Well, it was for a good cause and that is.. I HAVE MOVED TO THE NEW BLOGGER! Yes, no more Classic Blogger!

Actually this move was quite bold of me because I am not familiar with XML language and codes at all, and though it seems easier for people to drag and drop widgets according to their preference, the nitty gritty details such as spacing, colours, fonts, paddings etc are in the style sheet - which is in XML.

You wouldn't really be able to see much of a difference because I really want to stick to my previous layout, so the whole day I was figuring out how to do the codes and stuff in XML language. Gosh, almost died.

So here I am, presenting to you this site in the new blogger, and I promise you it will look the same across all internet browsers! No longer do I have to write separate scripts for Internet Explorer! Enjoy!

Henderson Waves

(continued from Hortpark and Alexandra Arch..)

After a really really long walk (precisely 2.7km I think), we finally arrived at Henderson Waves!

Henderson Waves
Distance: 0.3 km
Walking Time: 05 mins

At 36 metres above Henderson Road, Henderson Waves is the highest pedestrian bridge in Singapore. It was built to connect the two hills of Mount Faber and Telok Blangah Hill.

The bridge has a unique wave-form made up of seven undulating curved steel “ribs” that alternately rise over and under its deck. The curved “ribs” form alcoves that function as shelters with seats within.

Slats of yellow balau wood, an all-weather timber found in South-East Asia, are used in the decking. Look out for carvings on the slats marking the height you are at on various points along the bridge.

The wave-forms will be lit with attractive LED light from 7pm to 2am daily, giving the bridge an illuminative glow.
How to get there?
By Bus: take bus service number 131, 145, 176 or 648 alight at bus stop along Henderson Road, take the staircase up to Mount Faber Park.

By Car: Parking is available at Mount Faber Carpark D (17 lots) and Telok Blangah Hill Park Carpark 1 (17 lots) & Carpark 2 (total 39 lots)

Walking up Telok Blangah Hill is really tiring, with your jeans on, the hot sun.. gosh!

Hooray! We arrived!

My man.. standing right there

A view to kill! Once again, people who are afraid of heights beware!

The sun was on its low after a while

These wave like structures serve as shelters as well!

The wave like structure throughout the whole bridge. Serves as a form of shelter as well

There you go.. dehydrated.

How can anyone smile when the glare is on you!

Nice trees.

Giddy heights!

Can you see how high we are?

Twist!

Yeah, we were happy.

Disclaimer: All photos from this entry and the previous 2 entries are taken by my iphone 2.0 mp camera. Blame myself for not bringing my camera along. Sigh

Alexandra Arch & Forest Walk

(Continued from Hortpark..)

After touring Hortpark, we strolled towards Alexandra Arch! You definitely can't miss this bridge!

Alexandra Arch
Distance: 0.08 km
Walking Time: 05 mins

The bridge, with its curved deck and tilted arch, spans across Alexandra Road like an opened leaf.  On the Hyderabad Road side, the bridge is connected to HortPark - the gardening hub, via the Floral Walk. Near the bridge is Gillman Village, a former British military camp in the early 20th century, is now home to an eclectic mix of restaurants, pubs and art galleries.

At night, the bridge will dazzle with colour-changing LED lights. The lights display will be on between 7pm and 12am daily.

After crossing the bridge, we arrived at the Forest Walk! I have a thing for heights, so people who are afraid of heights, beware! Worst of all, the walkway has tiny slips so when you look down, you can see how high you are above ground! Scary!

Dear ain't afraid of heights!
Any idea how high we are above ground?
Ha this tickles me all the time! You mean they want us to tiptoe through the whole walk?
Part of the walk..
Hey! That's us again!
Seems like "ladders and stairs"

Up next.. Henderson Wave! More next! I promise it will be a view to kill!

Hortpark

Usually, one would head straight for the cinemas for a show after exams or participate in leisure activities such as bowling, pool, sentosa etc.. Well, not for me! Yesterday I suggested to visit Hortpark after my exams and a fulfilling lunch at Vivocity, and indeed, dear and I went there to check it out!

Address:  33 Hyderabad Road, Off Alexandra Road

We arrived at Hortpark Centre!
Here in the Garden Path, you can see unique shelters and fixtures that blend in nicely with its garden like setting
A nice bridge
I like the idea where you can plant in anything -  like a shoe!
Dear reliving his childhood days by having a time of his life in the playground
Look! They even have queer-cute-looking statues erected in the midst of the gardens. Hmm, is that supposed to be a scarecrow?
Now, that's a proper scarecrow!
This sends mixed signals. Is dear hungry, or jealous that he doesn't have a tummy as big as Mr. Lion?
What I call a Pot Man.
This dreamy like shelter reminds me those settings found in Lord of the Rings. Haha! Airy Fairy!
With so many signs, you won't get lost for sure
Another bridge. This looks familiar! I think I saw this in one of Teletubbies episode hehe
Any idea how big this tree is? Try spotting dear!
A little pond beside the Prototype Glass house
A series of Prototype Glasshouses that are.. locked?
Finally, you see him smiling.
And that's me!
Upon arriving at the Hortpark centre, you will be greeted by these nice comfy chairs! No shelter though.
Dining in the open at KHA
That's really comfy you know.. I might get this some day!

Coming up.. Alexandra Arch, Treetop Walk, and Henderson Waves! We visited all in a day actually, just that want to leave a post each to its own! Stay tuned!
