Understanding Anemia

I remember how I've always been terribly afraid of crossing onto a boat, roller blading, or even walking across the wooden boardwalk of the Kelong.

I honestly thought it was just me having issues with balance and the phobia of standing on shaky ground.

That's why I've always admired how people could stand or walk by the sides of the boat, or how they would strut across the wooden platforms of Kelong, or even roller blade so well.

For a while now, I thought it was because I had small ankles.

But after stumbling onto a site that educates Anemia, I was shocked! Here's why:

Symptoms of Anemia
The symptoms of iron deficiency anemia (if any) are:
  • Paleness
  • Weakness
  • Tiredness
  • Chest pains (in severe cases)
  • Shortness of breath (in severe cases)
  • Heart palpitations (in severe cases)
  • An increased heart rate especially during exertion (in severe cases)
  • Rapid breathing
  • Low blood pressure
The symptoms of vitamin B12 anemia are similar to those of iron deficiency anemia but can also cause:
  • Jaundice
  • Numbness and tingling in the hands and feet
  • Equilibrium difficulties
  • Confusion
  • Personality changes and depression
  • The symptoms of folic acid deficiency are similar to vitamin B12 anemia.
Symptoms of anemia may also include:
  • Black, maroon or bloody stool
  • Abdominal pain
  • Weight loss
  • Fatigue
  • Chest pain

Everything fits! The Weight Loss, Abdominal Pain, Chest Pains, Fatigue, Numbness and Tingling in Hands and Feet, Low Blood Pressure, Rapid Breathing (Sometimes), Weakness, and more importantly.. Equilibrium Difficulties! :D

How true is that? Now I know I don't have weak ankles. It's just part of the whole package!

My Maggie Mee

When it is pouring outside and you have nothing but loose change in your purse, you can't help but get to your feet and whip up the simplest dish you can think of - Maggie Mee.

Instead of the usual method of cooking the noodles with a soup full of Monosodium Glutamate, I liked my Maggie Mee dry, tangy, and bouncy with light soya sauce, eggs and a piece of hotdog.

Nothing beats this when you are indoors with no money, and a bag full of lazy bones.

The One About The Run

For a long time in a while, I haven't had a run.... until yesterday.

Since I had time in my hands, I decided to change into my Sports Attire, put on my Nike Socks and head to the little park situated downstairs for a short run.

"I'll just run 5 rounds," I thought to myself.

So I did some stretching and warming up exercises, and off I ran! :)

After the end of the second round, I felt breathless and cold, weak and giddy, and so I decided to stop after my third round.

I persevered by humming to the tunes of different songs, repeatedly psyching myself to endure, and even counting the number of inhales and exhales I made.

Finally after the third round, I gave up.

I walked towards my block and just as I was passing a through another block, it hit me. Yes, the giddiness, nausea, bloatiness, hyperventilation.. everything! It brought me weak to my knees and made me so faint, that I had to sit down.

Fortunately there was a stone table and chairs (those commonly found beneath HDB buildings for old folks to sit around and play chess) situated a few feet away, and so I gathered all the energy and strength I had, and dragged my feet to the stone chairs to rest.

My head felt so light and heavy at the same time, I could even feel my heartbeat racing through my temples. My lungs felt so tight and inhaling felt so difficult. My knees and ankles were so weak, I couldn't even stand up. My stomach was so bloated, I felt I could just embarrass myself by soiling myself. I felt nauseous each time I coughed for more air, and each time I did so, I gagged.

It was so horrible that when I propped my head on my arm on the table, I just couldn't breathe.

But I did remember telling myself in my head "It's all in the mind. Pick yourself up."

So I tried. Little did I know that after a few steps, I plonked onto the cement floor, and leaned my back against the wall.

Fortunately I didn't pass out. As I sat on the floor, I kept praying in my mind. At that point of my time, it dawned upon me that can't pass out because there were so many foreign construction workers who just got off work and who knows what would happen if I pass out?

Thankfully, I was alright in a matter of minutes and before I knew it, I could walk home again.

..

See this incident has happened before in my Secondary days, my College days, and then.. now.

I start to wonder if it's really my low blood causing the issue, or is the the low blood mixed with stomach cramps, or that I drank too much water, or if I didn't drink enough water, of even the weather!

Gosh. Am I really not meant for sports?

After all, I was asked by a doctor when I was in Secondary School, if I needed a permanent Medical Certificate to relieve me from sports and strenuous exercise because he knew that I had low blood pressure.

Ha back then, I scoffed at him and replied, "No? I've got my Table Tennis tournaments coming up!"

Darn. I should have heeded his advice.

Like me, Mocha enjoys lazing around, propping her legs up the table leg and enjoying strokes of love from her head to her furry body.

Ha! I guess we're both loving life right now! :D

Roll It On!

To all Vainpots, Beauty Queens, and regular ladies like you and me,

If you are suffering from dark eye bags, dark eye circles or realize you have puffy eyes when you wake up one day, then Garnier Brightening Eye Roll-On is a must buy!

Or when you have tired and heavy eyes, just roll this on the top or the bottom of your eyes and viola! Instant refreshing effect! :)

I have personally tried this product and I must say, it has been pretty useful and handy. However for the reduction of dark eye circles and eye bags, you have to roll it on consistently for 28 days.

So what are you ladies waiting for, get it at your nearest Watsons for only $19++ (Ha! I vaguely remember the Retail Selling Price)

Couple T-Shirts

Dear and I don't have a couple T-shirts.

But ever since my last shopping trip where I bought these 2 shirts as shown above, it became our very first couple T-shirts! :)

Unfortunately, I still don't fancy T-shirts. Looks like this shirt will be left on the shelf to collect dust soon.

Fishing: Trip #3

It seems like the fishing culture in our church is spreading! This time round, Weston, Christine and Auntie Serene joined us.

Ha! Our previous fishing trip was mostly youths. This trip however, was all adults!

Arriving at the Changi Jetty, the boatman had not arrived. Not because he was late, but he arrived while we were having our breakfast. So the boatman decided to head off to the Kelong to buy the usual bait - live prawns while we continue to enjoy our breakfast.

Finally after waiting a great deal of time, the boatman finally arrived!

The "toilet" facility on the boat just in case we need to answer to the call of nature. Ha! I know it looks really dirty but better than none right?

Fishing orientation 101 by Uncle Neo. Ha! While the newcomers were listening attentively..

... Dear and I were cam-whoring. Ha ha ha! Well, I'm glad that he could make it this time round because he had school the previous fishing trip.

When we arrived at the first fishing spot, Weston was all eager to cast his line! Auntie Serene randomly caught a fish as well. (She claimed that she couldn't feel the nibble and was reeling back the line when the fish was just...... there!)

Next up, off to our second fishing spot!

Here, the boatman caught the biggest fish we have seen by far! (Fish held by Dear) Dan also caught a really big Garoupa! One of the biggest catch we had by our own people! Good job Dan! :)

The back of the boat, where some of us (especially me) will sit and fish.

Here's the boatman. When he's not driving the boat, he would grab our live prawns and fish as well. Whatever catch he has, he would give it to us. On other times, he would just fall asleep!

Aaahhhh! I caught a really weird looking fish! Ha! The fish was so heavy, I thought my bait got caught in a coral and as I frantically called Uncle Mark (our fishing guru) to help me, it turned out to be this big weird looking fish. Any idea what breed this is?

Auntie Serene also caught an even weirder fish. It is thin and flat, with reptile-like skin and puny eyes. She threw the fish back in the sea because Uncle Neo said that both he and Uncle Mark never see this type of fish before. To play safe, better not eat.

At the front of the boat, Dan, I and Uncle Mark caught lots of this sort of fish. I call them the hungry-stupid fish.

At the 3rd fishing spot (I can't recall is it the 3rd or the 4th fishing trip), I caught this big Garoupa! Though not as big as Dan's Garoupa, but rather sizable!

Shortly afater that sizable Groupa, I caught a big Red Snapper! You should have seen me.. I was elated!

There right smack in the middle is the BIG fish caught by the boatman. Overall, we caught lesser fish than previous trips but definitely much much bigger than before!

When we arrived back at Singapore, we split the fishes. Dear and I didn't take any home, but we sure enjoyed the satisfaction of giving others the fishes we caught so that they would have nice steamed fresh fish for dinner over the next few days.

Looking forward to Fishing: Trip #4! Teehehe!

Spring Forth

On the train ride home, I was wishing for the ability to teleport or have my own car so that I can spend less time traveling to and fro places, when suddenly an image flashed in my mind.
"Ahh! A spring! Hmmm... I wonder why there is a picture of a spring in my head?" I wondered.

As if an image of an imaginary spring isn't enough, I saw in my mind, the spring compress really slowly. Like the exaggerated version of Neo dodging bullets from an Agent in the movie Matrix.

Suddenly, God impressed upon my heart a verse:

2 Corinthians 4:8-18 (New International Version)
8We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; 9persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.....
16Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. 17For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. 18So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

Then is suddenly dawned upon me that the image of the compressed spring in my mind was referring to the troubles and pressures we face in today's world.

At work we are pressed and crushed with heaps of work, endless datelines, bosses' expectations, and not forgetting politics that cause us to rip our hair sometimes.

At school we are pressed with the academic pressures of not only passing exams, but doing well in major examinations so that are granted a place in what we deem as the more prestigious schools that we perceive will get us a diploma or a degree.. which then grant us a chance to compete against 3 million plus working adults with the same qualifications.. or higher.

In the world, Christians are being persecuted for their faith.

It is a painful truth we face and cannot escape. Troubles will always come, obstacles stumble us and cause us to cry out for help, people will always be critical and judgmental. An endless cycle I would say.

But wait. There's hope!

1 Corinthians 10:13 (New International Version)
13No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.

Just like the image of the compressed spring, I believe that when we are pressed, crushed, struck down, we will spring forth as a greater conqueror and victor. Just like how the compressed spring releases its energy and returns to it's original shape.

It's all a matter of perspective when you look at your situation and circumstance. One can rejoice in trials and tribulations because one knows the power and the victory that has been given to go through it.

On the contrary, one can also sulk in despair and depression, and blame God for this downfall.

How would you look at it?

..

With the image of the spring in mind, I went home with a subtle comfort and quiet assurance that indeed, God reveals himself in mysterious ways.

Happy Finds

Usually after an exam or test is done or when I am really in a good mood, I go for some retail therapy.. with real money that is!

Yesterday, I was filled with merriment, gaiety and joy for no apparent reason and hence, I decided to patronize the shopping malls of Tampines after my exam.

Remember the Crocs Prima Shoes that I bought sometime last month? I managed to find alphabet studs to fill up the holes on my shoes! I couldn't get G-R-A-C-E and L-E-O-N-G on each shoe because the alphabets come in pairs :(

Price: $2.95 for a set of alphabets.
Promotion: 3 sets for $6
Store: Mini Toons
Then I walked through the shelves of Isetan when I spotted this really cute and classy bag. Well I wouldn't say it's really classy but it has this casual feminine cool factor. Gosh I don't know what I'm saying.

Price: $39.90
Store: Isetan

Ps: There is a smaller one for $33.90 but I guess it's more worth it to pay $6 more and have more space for more things hehe!

Last but not least, these shirts that cost some what like 20 times cheaper than the authentic ones. Ha ha you know me, cheapskate and all. Anyway the shirts are not meant to be couple T-shirts, but since I got one for dear and myself.. oh what the heck!

Price: $10 each
Store: Pushcart At Tampines Interchange

Ps: This pushcart sells lots of Baby Milo T-shirts that look really genuine. Comes with Baby Milo and Spongebob, Baby Milo and Mario, Baby Milo, Baby Milo and Hello Kitty :)

Well it sure feels good to spend some money and pamper myself once in a while! :D

Mould And Mushrooms

I'm not sadistic, but I find it really cool to discover mould growing on this cake today.

Well, it isn't everyday that I can see mould growing on food right?

Anyway, this was my birthday cake, baked by dear and I last Tuesday.
I think it's looks really cute (in a non sadistic way) because to me, they look like the buds of Pussy Willows growing all over.

Hmm, I wonder if they would grow into Mushrooms one day?

Love Fest 2009

This year as majority of the world celebrated Valentine's Day with flowers, chocolates, and a romantic dinner, the youths and young adults of Zion Full Gospel Church celebrated Valentine's Day in Spring Grove Club House.

The event, Love Fest, was not only a celebration of love on Valentine's Day, but more importantly an opportunity for the youths and young adults of Zion Full Gospel Church to share God's love with each other, especially with our non-believing friends.

We gathered back at church, before setting out to Spring Grove which is a stone's throw from church.

At the reception, all of us were waiting eagerly to enter the room and for the program to begin. Meanwhile, we hung around and chatted with each other!

The program commenced with a warm welcome by Darren the emcee, followed by a short game to get to know each other, and then.. DINNER TIME!

As you can see from above, everyone's eating and talking.. It was full house!

After dinner, we had more games and fun. After which the people above were crowned Senior Love Fest, Junior Love Fest accordingly :)

Here's all of us who attended the event! It was indeed a fun filled time of fellowship, laughter, and joy! Special thanks to the people that made this possible!

I'm certainly looking forward to Love Fest 2010! :D

Battling Learning Curves

If you have been a faithful reader of my site, you'd realize that my posts pretty much paint a rosy picture of my life, of which one might assume to be sometimes too smooth-sailing and monotonous.

Truth is, I do have moments in which I am in rage or display expressions of angst or even throw fits of tantrums, especially during the female monthly cycle. These moments are which I am not proud of, and see no reason why the rest of the world should swallow my rants and emotions after reading my posts. Therefore I either keep things to myself and implode in safe manner, or I rant out in another weblog, where I aggressively type the keys as if the computer was the culprit who incurred my wrath.

As a result, I have resolved in my mind and heart sometime last year to at least try to portray some form of maturity in my posts and language, and even abstain from using Singlish.

I wouldn't say I have succeeded because here I am on a partially ranting mode, and also partially in a state where I try to explain myself that this post is about my frustrations with learning curves.

..

You see if I had all the money and time in the world, I would definitely take up Photography as a hobby, or hopefully as a job. But until that thought ever comes to past, I am still stuck on this huge learning curve with my new Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3.

Like being amazed at the functions this camera has isn't enough, I still grapple with trying to improve on taking better pictures. Of course, any DSLR would win hands down, but I believe that my camera isn't that bad, but only after I have fully understood each and every function and gained a certain form of experience first.

It's frustrating I must say, to be on this learning curve. I wished that things would be so much easier if I had a mentor to learn from and be inspired by.

But snapping back to reality, here I am alone, fumbling with my new camera, taking in as much advice I can, trying to suck up some criticisms, and assuring myself that hey grace, your pictures aren't that bad.

After all, I'm not a professional photographer. :(

Not The Usual Thursday

Like most Thursdays, I went for cell today.

Everything was as usual, a short time of Worship led by Alex, followed by Sharing and Testimonies by all of us (today was a really small group of us), then Prayer and Closing before we end with refreshments and fellowship.

But today was different :)

Christine walked out of the kitchen with a cake in her hands, and smiled at me cheekily. Aha! I knew that the cake was meant for me, and I ran to her and thanked her for getting my favorite cake - DURIAN CAKE! :D

Awwwhhhhh thank you dearest Weston and Christine for the cake! I really loved every bit of it! By the way, the cake is really durian inside out. The 6 fruits you see on top of the durian cake are made of real durian fruit, and in between the cake layers are durian with cream. Aaaaahhhh~! Fantastic! Pardon me, I'm a durian lover :)

Ha that's me beaming with excitement! Rarely do I have birthday cakes for the past few birthdays I've had!

I was lost and disorientated for a moment because I'm not quite sure which is first, blowing the candles first, then making a wish then cutting the cake or some other combination?

Aha! I was supposed to cut the cake but as you can see above, I'm pretty much a dangerous lady with knives :)

Turning Twenty-One

I finally turn 21 today.

In the eyes of the law, I am legal, I am an adult, and I am able to watch all the RA movies I want. (Ha! Kidding!) But in the eyes of my parents, I know I will always be their kid.

I remember how I've always anticipated for this day to come ever since the start of my teenage years.

Today, the day has finally come and contrary to how my other friends have celebrated their 21st birthday parties with extravagant parties in pubs, restaurants or hotels, I had my own mini birthday celebration at home.

Well you might think it's boring but I beg to differ. After all, I have resolved to do meaningful and fulfilling things to commemorate this day. I guess this year, I had this strong urge to do things a little different, with a touch of homeliness and love.

So instead of buying a cake, dear and I baked a cake together.

Instead of having dinner outside at a fancy restaurant, I had steamboat dinner at home, where Mom prepared the food and I contributed by doing the grocery shopping.

Instead of watching a movie outside, dear and I watched a movie at my place, while doing up the Spongebob Lego that Meldred gave.

See, the things I did today were priceless. After all, I feel that birthdays should be celebrated meaningfully and not just rushing through parties and be giddy with fun. Because when you do so, you get home exhausted and hardly can recall how you even spent the day.

I celebrated my 21st birthday in a relaxed mode. Time passed by slowly today and I enjoyed every moment of it.

Here are the train of events:

I received my last term's results the day before my birthday and I was really relieved to get A and B, because Business Law module was a tough one and it really drove me up the wall. Thank God for His wisdom! I felt that these results were a way to celebrate my birthday, somehow or another.

Among the items I bought during Grocery Shopping was these heart shaped balloons, which were intended to decorate my room to inject some birthday mood!

I made Patrick wear a Party hat and invited the rest of the Plush Toys to my mini birthday party!

When dear arrived in the afternoon after his work, I engaged him to start blowing the balloons because I am absolutely terrified of going near these unpredictable air filled things!

Then, we got down to baking my birthday cake. Thank God he has some baking experience, as so he says!

We are no pros because we used Betty Crocker's Chocolate Fudge Cake Mix which is pretty instant! Just add in 1 half cups of water, half cup of vegetable oil, and 3 eggs. Really simple!

The end product! I know it doesn't look appealing but it really smells and taste good!

Dear was so satisfied with himself that he kept smelling the cake and grinning at it from ear to ear.

We then did the Spongebob Lego that Meldred gave to me last Sunday. Thanks Meldred and Darren for the gift! I really love it!

That's us piecing up the lego! Brings back childhood memories indeed.

Cute characters of Patrick in the Krabby Mobile, Mr Krabs with his money, and Spongebob with Krabby Patties.

Finally, it is finished! The end product of our time and effort!

After the cake had cooled down, dear went on to smear the top of the cake with a thin layer of Hershey's syrup, because I insisted to. Then he decorated the cake with colourful M&M's to form the number 21 :)

Isn't this yummy or what? My 21st Birthday Cake!

Goofy birthday looks from the family! I love party hats and heart-shaped balloons! :D

Looks like everyone's busy! All except me.. busy taking photos!

Cam-whoring and resting after the Lego session and baking!

While waiting for the Steamboat to start, dear was hit with fatigue. Poor thing! Try working half the day, rushing to bake a cake followed by a Lego session, no wonder he concussed!

The 'special guest' had to say grace for the food!

Ah~ A sumptuous spread of food! We had so much food leftover that I suggested to mom that we could use the leftovers for Yong Tau Foo on Wednesday and Salmon Fillet with Noodles on Thursday!

A hearty meal with my family is priceless. Thanks mom for preparing all the food!

Sneak shots before calling the family in hehe! Our cake, made with tenderloving care and lots of love!

A group shot before the birthday song began. Ha! The corny me handed each one a party hat and a heart shaped balloon and made them wear the hat!

"Happy Birthday to you! Happy Birthday to you! Happy Birthday to GRACE! Happy Birthday to you!"

Making a wish and then cutting the cake! On the side note, I have no idea what my brother was doing.

Introducing Ruby - the new addition to the Teddy family, a gift from my parents, along with 2 red packets and a necklace made of White Gold. Cool!

Haha this is dear playing with Ruby! Guess he's trying to drop me a hint through Ruby :D

At the end of the day, I was exhausted with euphoria and glee. I really had a great time with my loved ones and I really thank both my parents and dear for all the hard work and their presents!

Now that I'm 21, I'll probably like what Weston says "age like cheese!" from there after! Oh bother!
