Esther Turns 21 (Finally)

Like every other normal kid, I have a childhood friend whom I've known ever since I was a little girl. Well, we didn't play our barbie dolls together, or hopscotch, or even a short game of catching. In fact if I am not wrong, we didn't interact much as kids back then.

But as we grew older and continued to attend the same church, we got to know each other better and soon, we became sisters; watching out and being accountable to each other.

So recently, I was invited to her GREEN birthday party on Friday to celebrate her 21st birthday and in the midst of all the fun and celebratory mood, my dear sister had a surprise of her lifetime:

Yes, Samuel came back all the way from France just to surprise her on her birthday itself. I guess his presence itself was a very costly present from him to her.

The smirk of success after Mr. Banana had revealed himself and surprised the whole entire audience with his special and sudden appearance.

Later in the party, we continued to have a fun time of "Old Maid" where everyone was given a stack of cards and they to take a card from their left. If they realize that they have 2 of a kind, they can put the twin cards on the floor and the the person who has the Old Maid card left loses at the end of the game. Interestingly, there were 4 Old Maid cards and as a result, there were 4 forfeiters.

The forfeiter will then have to choose 3 friends to participate in their forfeit. Little did these forfeiters know that the 3 friends that they have chosen would eventually dress them up for a 'fashion show'.

Finally, it was time to sing the birthday song and cut the cake. Well, my dear sister's finally 21!

Then, group photos were taken with various people that were present. As you can see from above, we had quite a blast at her party!

Before I left, I gave her personalize birthday gift - A green T-shirt with her name ironed on it. Well I really hope she likes this present. Anyway, Happy 21st birthday girl! :)

The Weird Man

As much as I loathe public transport because of the all the ugly sides that Singaporeans portray eg: snatching seats, talking loudly, eating on the train etc, I find it interesting to occasionally stumble upon queer people with really peculiar habits and gestures. Take for example this man:

I have absolutely no idea what he was doing except to guess that he was probably practicing some sort of martial art stance. Now that was quite an entertainment trying to hold in my laughter while taking the MRT home.

P/s: Pardon the video angle, can't seem to rotate it with available and free softwares off the net.

Primarily Penang

When dear told me that he was going on a 1 day business trip to Penang the day before, I was both excited and glad because it was something different from his usual job scope and yet a very rare opportunity - tell me which employer would send a 24 year old overseas to get a job done, and top of that, rent a car for him to travel about Penang?

What a lucky fellow!

Anyway, I headed to the airport to meet dear. It was my first experience picking him up and I was excited to see him and hear of his Penang experience!

While waiting, I noticed some commotion outside the arrival halls where I stood. Not sure what was going on, but I guess it has something to do with people coming back from Cebu on Silkair. You can definitely infer that I don't read the news much.

Finally, I saw a familiar figure walking towards me and it's him! We then went off to have some drinks and dear just went on yakking about his Penang trip.

After the whole chit chat session on Penang and what are the places he'll never visit again, he opened his bag and passed me 2 "souvenirs" - A Spongebob pillow and a Rabbit nail clipper. Naturally, I squealed with delight because he was thoughtful enough to get me my favorite Spongebob and a Rabbit nail clipper because I like Rabbits. Sweet fellow isn't he? :D

Dear went on to show me the pictures he took on his Penang trip:

The car that his company rented

His face revealed both excitement and anticipation

One of Penang's attraction: The Penang Bridge

After his job was done, he had lots of time to spare. Unfortunately his GPS unit was down so he had to navigate his way with a map of Penang.

Attractions of Penang which dear cannot remember

Lunch at a highly hygiene suspicious food stall

Yet he still can order what seems like a plate of Mee Goreng and have no stomachache. Surprisingly, it was the milk from the Ice Teh Si that he drank at Changi Airport T3 that caused a huge stomach upset!

More places he visited with absolutely no recollection of their names

Chinese Chamber of Commerce

Horses looking for food

.. And that concludes his trip to Penang. If only I could tag along. Pfffftt!

Look what I bought!

I can't believe how cheap and comfortable these pair of socks are! And you know what, I'm just going to mismatch these 2 pairs on purpose so that I'll end up with Spongebob on my left feet and Patrick on my right! :D

P/s: I know it looks kinda small, but surprisingly, it fits my feet perfectly!

You know you are loved when your mom buys you your favorite locket when she knows that the old one has tarnished :)

The one on the left is the new locket, the one on the right is obviously tarnished and old.

Love the motif on the locket!

Ruby's New Home

Ruby is 7 months old and HE IS STILL GROWING! To accommodate his growth and his active lifestyle, I've finally decided to get him a bigger cage and essentially, make him a happier rabbit.

However, being a student means that budget constraints are tight and therefore, I decided that a good condition second hand cage that is below a $100 would suffice. Fortunately, I manage to find a seller of a 1m long rabbit cage with the power of the internet in just a few clicks.

Immediately, I text the seller to indicate that I was interested in his cage and within the next day, he delivered the cage to my doorstep - Simple is that!

As you can see, Ruby's busy checking out the cage.

And here's Ruby giving me a weird look. Must be the new house that is causing some apprehension.

Well, I'm not sure that he likes it but I think he does because all day long, I hear the sound of Ruby hopping about, scampering, dragging the little "hut" in his new cage etc.. Here's an example:

Hmm. I think with all the leg space for him to stretch and do his routine hopping exercise, he'll be quite a happy rabbit for some time! :D

C Is For..

From the above, I gather that A is for Achievement, C is for Complacent.

Although I did try my best and put in my 101% (as claimed by every other student), I suspect the cause of this surprising grade is because of my assignments, which weighs about 20% of the grade.

Perhaps I should get use to this common sight? No way. Somehow I am very much compelled to be a tad more studious and .. humble.

Lessons On Love

Recently while chatting amongst my friends, I was asked the secret to my 6 year old relationship. For a moment, I was stumped at that question. But after cracking my brains, I gave my friends some words of wisdom.

Well I am neither a relationship guru, nor a love consultant. Not even close. But in my relationship, I have certainly picked up a few tips and have learnt precious lessons. Despite these tips and lessons, I admit that I can't boldly declare that my relationship will last forever and ever. Deep in my heart, there is still the slightest tinge of insecurity, fear, and doubt. I'm not sure about my better half, but we try to make things work out and ultimately, we hope to fulfill a mutual goal in the future.

So back to the point of my 'secret' to my 6 year old relationship. Hmm. Well I do have a few pointers:

1. Maintain healthy distances. I believe in personal space and distance because these are the times where you take time to do the things you like and spend time with other people or yourself or your family. For dear and I, we don't meet everyday; probably 3 to 4 times each week. So what do I do on days I don't meet him? I hangout with friends, I spend time at home etc. There are so many things to do without your partner!

2. Get a mutual hobby or activity. Ahhh. The best thing you can do together is something both of you like. Be it fishing, or some sport, or even a simple activity, these are the times where you can tighten the bond with laughter, teamwork, and love. For dear and I, we enjoy fishing occasionally but most of the time, we visit places locally (and non-locally) with our friends about once a week.

3. Have mutual friends to hang out with. Well it's sad to admit but three is indeed a crowd. So get to know each other's friends and hang out with them together with your partner. You'll soon realize that you get to have the best of both worlds - friends and boyfriend at the same time!

4. Selflessness. This might perhaps be the most painful and difficult gesture for anyone especially in times of strife. I don't particularly know how to elaborate the benefits of being selfless, except that the more selfless you are, the deeper the love would be and the love you will receive from your partner. Click here to read more about selflessness.

So what do you guys think? Or do anyone have other precious pointers to share? :)

Abnormal Sunday

It's quite rare to see me enjoying a cup of coffee, having breakfast and reading a copy of Sunday Times at Toast Box on a Sunday morning.

Usually, my typical Sunday morning would be pretty busy - moving and unpacking sound equipment from the store room to Golden Village Hall 5 where our English service is held, then setting up the keyboard in preparation for service, followed by sound check, a quick run through of songs and finally, a few sips of my coffee and mouthful of some bread before service starts.

Well, this goes on quite often for me because of the limited keyboardists available. So whenever I'm not playing for service (either English or Chinese), I take some time off to just slow down on a Sunday morning, have a hearty breakfast and enjoy the beautiful morning.

Couple Calendars

Previously, I mentioned about how dear and I often video chat instead of phone chat. Well, that's just for communication.

Well, we've stepped up the next level as a Techie couple, and here's how we 'operate' and manage our daily schedules and calendar:

The above screenshot is just an example of the month of May 2009. As you can see, Orange colored schedules belong to my school and personal calendar, Blue colored schedules belong to dear's School and Personal calendar, and lastly, Green colored schedules belong to his work calendar.

Well there is a functional purpose for this if you might ask. As per my previous post where I mentioned about girlfriends or wives performing multiple roles, the purpose of this calendar is to for me to give dear his wake up calls, or remind him about events or schedules, and for each other to know what's going on in the day itself.

It's been quite useful so far, and we're more or less informed about each other's schedules and plans. As such, planning a trip or deciding to meet up after school or work makes things a whole lot easier.

Super Girlfriends

In the past, women were treated as the weaker sex and the home-makers, and as such, their voices were kept silent, they had no freedom of speech and expression. What a far cry from the women in our society today.

Women, especially girlfriends and wives, play multiple roles in society today. They work, they take care of the house, and for wives, they take care of the children. Not to put the men in the negative light, but women these days are really noble. They seem to have the incredible strength and skill to multi-task and juggle between so many things - Work, home and children. Like that's not hard enough, they seem to be able to perform other roles for their husbands or boyfriends too.

What roles you might think? Simple. Boyfriends or husbands can attest to the hundreds (or thousands) of times when their girlfriends or wives remind them of an event or a task, or how a girlfriend or wife so willingly takes care of them when they are sick. Even the most simple task like buying lunch or cooking dinner are roles that we girlfriends or wives play.

Then again, this isn't true for all girlfriends or wives. I personally know of some that has zero knowledge about housework, are self-absorbed, and spends whatever allowance she has on branded stuff.

So it brings me to ask all guys out there: "What is your ideal girlfriend/wife?" Well last time, taking care of the house and children would suffice. Now it seems to me that we ladies need to step up and juggle more balls than our hands can carry.

Sinus Infection

"Your ear trouble is caused by loud noises in the air, your nose trouble is caused by funny smells in the air, your throat trouble is caused by strange particles in the air."

It's been four days since I last had a fever and just as my body was feeling better, I'm down with Sinus Infection.

  1. Pain and/or pressure in the area of your eyes or forehead. Or pain in the very top of your head - especially if the pain gets more intense when you bend over or move your head quickly.
  2. Sinus drainage. This can be any color from clear to greenish-yellow or even bloody. And it may not drain out your nose. Often your sinuses will drain down the back of your throat-and you swallow it.
  3. Nausea or upset stomach-often caused by swallowing the drainage.
  4. Fatigue even when you should feel rested. This is the sneakiest one of all. This is the one that creeps up on you slowly and unnoticed. If you are living with the symptoms on this list you are certainly not reaching your true potential at work, family life or at rest.
  5. Blocked nasal or sinus passages. Especially at night. Are you sleeping with your mouth open because you cant breathe through your nose when you lie down?
  6. Do you have a poor sense of smell or taste? If you are staying clogged up with mucous I bet you do.
  7. Bad breath. Think about it this way-your senses of smell and taste are really messed up right now-and you can still smell and taste your bad breath. What does everybody else think about your breath right now?
  8. Ear pain. It's not uncommon for a bad sinus infection to spread to your inner ears.
  9. Sore Throat.
  10. Chills, fever or general malaise. Are you feeling generally crappy?

It's terrible and just this afternoon, I finally went to see the doctor. Nonetheless, I sound like a man from all the coughing, my phlegm and mucus are green, I feel woozy all the time, and generally crappy. The only comfort I get right now is playing The Sims 3.

Dear and I were passing through Ubi yesterday when we saw this accident:

Immediately, dear stopped his bike along the side of the road and ran over to help.

A witness stepped up to explain what went on. As what I've heard from dear, the car was turning right and the arrow was green, indicating that he had the right of way. However, the motorcyclist was passing through the amber traffic light at that same time.

Anyhow, we waited for a while before the ambulance and police arrived.

Looking at accidents as such really make dear and I thank God for his journey mercies and protection.

Run For Your Life

But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. - 1 Timothy 6:11

Stumped at such a powerful message, I cannot help but agree more that in this day and age, we believers need to run away from anything that hinders our relationship with Him.

It's time to make a stand for what we believe in.

Hand Painted Shoes

Recently, I was asked to draw 2 pairs of shoes - Patrick and Spongebob, Elmo and Cookie Monster, for my auntie and little cousin.

It's been a while since I last made a pair of Spongebob and Patrick shoes and Elmo and Cookie Monster shoes. So as I was doing it, I felt that the standard had dropped a little as compared to the previous time that I drew.

As you can see from above, Spongebob and Patrick looks pretty ok but Elmo and Cookie Monster looks a tad distorted. FYI, it's tougher drawing Elmo and Cookie Monster. Somehow, I can't really get the proportions right. Pfffttt!

Well, I hope my auntie and cousin wouldn't mind! :$

I Heart Hello Kitty Watch

Bought this Hello Kitty watch some time ago at the toys section in NTUC even though I am not a Hello Kitty fan. Well, it looks really cute and sweet, and best of all, I can easily match this watch with a simple white top and jeans.

So today, it was my first time wearing this watch and I wasn't afraid of what people might think, of what others might say. I heart my Hello Kitty watch and if possible, I'd like to get a Spongebob watch too!

Ok fine. I might be 21 in age but 16 at heart! :D

Aches & Pain

Time check: 8.33 am. I woke up with a throbbing headache, my mouth felt like a dessert, and my body felt like it was thrown down from the 3rd story building.

Struggled to get up and grab a thermometer, placed it in my mouth and waited. The numbers seem to rise quickly to 37.5 ℃ and then slowly, it continue to ascend to 38.4 ℃.

My body continued to ache, and I plonked back to bed and closed my eyes, hoping that everything would be fine when I woke up. After all, I've only slept for about 5 hours before the pain from the headache and body ache woke me up.

So I closed my eyes, thought of happy thoughts, tried humming a song in my head to force myself back to sleep. But all I could feel was the pain radiating in every part of my body, and a headache that throbbed so hard, I thought my brain would explode any time soon.

"This can't do," I thought to myself. Reluctantly, I forced myself out of bed, went to my parents room with a thermometer showing 38.4℃ and shoved it to my mum saying "What does this mean?"

Haha. Quite a funny question to ask really. Anyway, mom just touched my forehead and asked me to self-medicate. So I shoved down a Panadol Extra, went back to bed and tried to force myself to sleep.

Time check: 9.00 am. This time, the snoozing from my alarm irritated the hell out of me, and the pain in my body didn't subside. The fever and headache however, seemed to subside. Got out of bed this time round with no intention of catching anymore sleep. Dragged myself to the toilet and brushed my teeth, turned on the computer, and fed Ruby.

Time check: 9.15 am. Finished typing this post and off to make my coffee. What a morning!

I'm quite certain that watching a rabbit groom himself wouldn't be as entertaining as watching a parrot mimic human words, a dog learning how to play dead, a cat eyeing each bird it sees, or even a hamster running in a wheel.

But you've got to admit that while watching Ruby in the above video, you would have at least squealed or smiled just a teeny weenie bit at his cuteness.

Doesn't Ruby look like a fur-ball with those cute long ears and pinkish-red eyes? Ultimate cuteness! :D

My Balancing Act

Woah it's halfway through the week and truthfully, I'm a little disoriented. It seems as if my mind is stuck in a holiday mode but my body is independently doing other tasks and going through the whole routine of school, church, friends, and relationships.

Strangely, I find this very recurring especially when I have to head back to school or work after the holidays. I wonder if it is just me or there are others out there who have similar thoughts.

Perhaps I am one who seeks balance in life, and failing to do so would result in a general discontentment and dissatisfaction - which is exactly how I am feeling now. Well, all's not lost. There are a few ways that I currently know do or know of to seek balance: Stay home and spend some "me" time, or go out and do some window shopping alone.

Thankfully my school lessons are all in the late afternoons and that allows me to sleep in and wake up to a morning filled with Sims 3 and endless facebook applications.

Haha. I guess "balance" will be restored in no time :D

Mr Men

Happened to watch the show "Taken" the other day and for a person who adores action-pack/thriller/suspense shows, Taken indeed took my breath away.

First thing to say is, this is a great and fun movie from beginning to end. If you like the Bourne titles then you will love this movie. The fighting style and the way things get done is similar to Matt Damon's character. It doesn't get old and is great to watch throughout the whole film.

The movie has a similar plot to other action thrillers, but even though you may know the outcome, it is the journey that counts in this movie. It is the way he does what he does, the way that he fights and overcomes problems that draws you into the movie and makes this movie so great to watch.

Liam Neeson

The show aside, watching the show Taken made me go goo-goo-ga-ga over Liam Neeson. In the show, he portrays himself as both a good guy and a bad guy as he fights to save his daughter who was taken away from him.

With his badass look bundled in a brawny man who exuberates a silent dangerous charm yet makes one feel secure and stable, what's there not to like about him?

Nicolas Cage

But I admit. Instead of going head-over-heels over celebrities that are young and handsome, I do have a thing for celebrities who are matured, cool, and have a badass look.

So before watching this show, I really liked Nicolas Cage, especially in shows like Windtalkers, Ghost Rider, National Treasure, The Rock etc.

In each show, he had that stable, confident, witty and intellectual look. Well, he might not be cute and adorable with a head of thick hair and a body like a fit and tanned 25 year old, but like how wine matures with age, I never got tired of him over time.

Other than Liam Neeson and Nicolas Cage, here's a list of other Mr. Men that caught my attention:

Wentworth Miller

Recently, I've also been catching every season and episode of what I think is the most popular show on Television - Prison Break. In it, the main character Michael Scofield (Wentworth Willer) also makes my heart skip several beats because of his intellectual mind and his clean and shaven look; which apparently is the kind of guy I've always had in mind.

Hugh Laurie

Other than Prison Break, I've also been hooked on House, an American television medical drama starring Dr. House (Hugh Laurie) as the main character - A highly-skilled and professional doctor, yet one who is a maverick, often coats his words with tasteful sarcasm and has low tolerance for empathy and emotions.

In this show, Hugh Laurie's piercing eyes and haggard look might not seem appealing, but his specialty coupled with his queer actions and sarcasm does make him charming; in a special way.

My beloved boyfriend

But these guys aside, dear isn't all that bad too. He's smart, intellectual, has a badass boy-boy look, and has a particular set of skills - IT. On top of that, he's musically inclined, fit, tall, and gives off that stable, dependable, loyal look.

And that's why I love him, deep deep. :D

Of Birthday Parties

I attended my cousin's 12th birthday last week and I was surprised to see a room full of adults sitting around instead of kids running about.

Fortunately, the adults are the ones I am familiar with in church, so there wasn't any awkwardness. But still, I was quite curious as to why my little cousin invited a more mature group. So I asked her and well, she prefers us over her friends I guess! :)

However, my cousin's birthday made me recall of my very first birthday party. I vaguely remember that I was Primary 5 or 6, and I invited around 10 of my friends from school. Mom bought a nice cake, and we ordered in KFC chicken and other finger food. It was fun and poor mom, had to clean up the mess we made after the party was over.

So as I grew up, I became wiser (or lazier, depends on how you'd interpret). Instead of spending money to book a venue and invite a room full of people whom I have to entertain, I decided to have a warm and cosy birthday party for my 21st birthday.

I guess it boils down to an individual's concept of a birthday celebration. I'm definitely one that prefers to be in my own comfort zone with my loved ones and some very good food :D

SURPRISE Crab Party

Life has been pretty exciting during my week of holiday. So far, I've been hanging out with friends, playing Barn Buddy and Pet Society, and spending time with dear and Ruby.

Ok that doesn't sound as exciting as it should be.

However the highlight of the week was a SURPRISE party for our dear Band Leader - Uncle Thomas! This whole party was organized by brother Derrick, to thank and appreciate Uncle Thomas for his service and leadership in the Worship Ministry.

So we gathered at Uncle Thomas's place on Friday, took the elevator up, pressed the doorbell and quietly hid somewhere. When he opened the door, we shouted "SURPRISE!" Gosh you should have seen the stunned look on his face!

video

Unfortunately I wasn't able to take the video of the whole entire process as I was fumbling to turn on my camera while my hands were full. But the video above is the aftermath of Uncle Thomas's reaction of looking stunned for about 10 seconds.

After Uncle Thomas has recovered from the surprise, we brought in the food that some of the youths prepared. As you can see from above, the main highlight of the party was CRAB! As such, most of us skipped our usual lunch just to feast on this.

Of course Crab wasn't the one and only dish. We had Curry Chicken..

Tom Yam Soup with fish, boiled tomatoes, golden mushrooms...

Meat with egg and sauce.. Simply delicious. You bet our stomachs were roaring with hunger as the table was being set.

The youths hanging around and watching some telly before dinner started and while table was being set.

Finally, dinner was ready and we gathered around to say Grace before our feast began!

Last but not least, we had glorious, yellow, creamy DURIANS for dessert!

With good food, good fellowship, good dessert, it was simply the best SURPRISE party ever! :D

Punggol Beach

Punggol Beach

Ok I admit. Despite being a Singapore Citizen for 21 years, I had absolutely no idea that there's a beach at Punggol.

It was only when my friend - CS and I went there for a little camera outing, did I realize that such a place actually exists in Singapore.

Jetty at Punggol Beach

So anyway, the trip to Punggol Beach was my very first camera outing, where I've managed to learn more about the technical aspects of a DSLR, how to take a 'meaninful' shots, the functions etc..

Sad to say that even though I had played around with a friend's DSLR prior to this trip, the learning curve was pretty steep because after all, I don't own a DSLR and let's just say that the distance between a point and shoot camera and a DSLR is like heaven and earth.

Rocky path leading back to the road

Even so, I'm glad that I've learnt a few tips and tricks from this camera outing (Thank you CS!) and now, I can't wait to get my very own DSLR! :D

P/s: Punggol beach is pretty romantic in the day or at night. Couples can consider going there for a quiet getaway!

Taking Heart

Sometimes I think that my heart is like a sponge. So soft, so fragile, has a large capacity for emotions, and will result in torrents of tears when triggered upon.

It's true, really. I tear easily when I'm angry, or upset, or discouraged, or disheartened. I get emotional when I see a particular episode of survivors where the contestants get to meet their loved ones after a long period time.

I even teared non-stop when I watched the last episode of Prison Break in Season 4 - The Final Break.
(I shall not be a spoiler for all your prison break fans out there!)

So sometimes, it makes me wonder about my whole entire Make-up, and occasionally, I ask God "Why am made the way I am?" since 'I was fearfully and wonderfully made' (Psalms 139:14)?

But towards the end of my teenage years, I've grown to accept the truth that there is a reason to why I am so emotional, so ever sensitive (sometimes overly sensitive), so broken, so tender, so vulnerable.

And though I might not fully understand why I was made and wired in such a way, I have come to realize that my emotions, my broken spirit, and my tender heart plays a big part in my worship to Him, and the anointing that He has upon my life when I serve as a keyboardist the worship ministry.

With this epiphany, I've embraced the fact that if I was made with such a purpose for such a time like this, then so be it God. Not my will, but Yours be done.
